Matrix is a film full of religious and philosophical symbolism. Plot assumes that people living in barrels for many years in the future, being fed false sensory information giant virtual reality computer (the Matrix). The perpetrators of this horror are machines people’s future, using as a source of energy. People are literally bred.
The central figure of the film, Neo, is presented to us in the introductory part of the film as a loner who is searching for a mysterious character called Morpheus (named after the Greek god of dreams and sleep). He is also trying to find the answer to the question “What is the Matrix?”
Neo Morpheus contacts as well as the machines (posing as sinister ‘agents’) are trying to keep Neo from to find out more. When Morpheus and Neo meet, Morpheus offers Neo two pills. Red pill will answer the question “What is the Matrix?” (by removing him from it) and the blue pill simply for life to continue as before. As Neo reaches for the red pill Morpheus warns Neo “Remember, everything I offer is the truth. Nothing more.”
Film as a whole and especially the selection of scene is deeply compelling. Why is the choice between what you think you know, and an unknown ‘real’ truth so fascinating? How could be viable option? On the one hand everyone you love, and everything you have built your own life. One other promise only of truth.
The question then is not about pills, but what is in these circumstances. The question is asking us whether reality, truth, it is worth. Blue pill will leave us as we are, life is composed of habit, of things, we believe we know. We are comfortable, we do not need truth to live. Blue pill symbolizes commute to work every day, or cleaning teeth.
Red pill is an unknown. We are told that we can help you find the truth. We do not know what the truth is, or even that the pill will help us find. Red pill symbolizes danger, doubt and questions. In order to answer the question, you may risk his life and the world in reality you have never experienced.
However, in order to investigate which to proceed, we need to investigate why the choice facing. Why should we still have to decide whether to continue in the truth?
Short answer is curiosity. Many people throughout human existence have questioned and asked. Most of them have been scientists or doctors or philosophers, but simply ordinary people ask ‘what if? ” or “why?” Asking these questions ultimately leads to the selection. If you continue to ask and explore, or stop and never again? This is essentially the question Neo in the film.
So what are the advantages of the blue pill? As one of the characters in the film says: “Ignorance is bliss” Essentially, when the truth is unknown, or you think you know the truth, what is there to question or worry about?
Adopting what we said and experiences, life can be easier. There is social pressure to ‘fit’, which is extremely strong in most cultures. Questioning the status quo bears the risk of ostracism, possibly persecution. This aspect has a strong link with politics. People who do well in the current system are not inclined to look favorably on those who question the system. Morpheus tells Neo “You have to understand that many people are willing disconnected, and many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on a system that will fight for its protection.”
The system also has a place for you, it is expected path to follow. This removes a lot of doubt and discomfort experienced by pioneer.
Another argument on the blue pills, as anyone knows that the status quo is not really true? The Act simply does not infer a lack of questioning the validity of the questioned. Why assume that your experience is innocent until proven guilty? Just accept everything?
So if the arguments for blue pills are so numerous, why the red pill? Why pursue truth even though it may be bitter, and difficult path to it? In the movie, Neo risk of death to escape the virtual reality and discovers a brutal reality from which he could not return. As problems arise, the question is that the answer is not necessarily what you want to hear.
Justify the red pill, we can ask what is the meaning of existence ignorant? Beyond what is existing there only? Simply existing brings humans to the level of objects that might have utility or even purpose, but where is the sense? Existence without meaning is certainly not living my life, but it is experiencing. Trinity Neo says, “Matrix can not tell you who you are.”
Given the potential disadvantages of choosing the red pill, should be motivation to discover the truth will be very strong. The film is much of this point. Trinity Neo says “It’s a question that drives us, Neo.” And Morpheus compares the motivation for seeking Neo to “splinter in your mind – driving you crazy.” Motivation for the answer to the question is of course a strong response to help us find meaning in our lives.
What we are looking at here is the way to answer the question, but the key to this is what drove the first place. Ask questions about our environment our experience and for us is fundamental to human. Children ask a seemingly never-ending stream of questions from an early age. It is only the education and socialization that some people stop asking these questions. We remain, as it were, hard-wired interview.
This is the inevitable consequence of consciousness. While to think consciously of itself and its existence, through the reality, must organize the information they receive from their senses. Just watch and record does not mind. That is what we do, that the information that allows us to think. In order to process and store huge quantities of information, the human brain tries to identify patterns in data, looking for patterns of what is experienced. This is the questioning of sensory information, and requires thinking. By definition, the mind wants to know. Knowing something requires more than just data, but intelligence or reasoning applied to these data. Tried to acquire the knowledge, we must therefore question the data our mind receives, so the question of consciousness.
So the metaphor of the journey to truth that Neo is complete. The journey begins with the question, is searching for answers and the answer can be achieved. This shows that the path does not start with Neo choosing between meals, or decide for yourself whether the question. The act of asking the question itself is an objective starting point as asking the question is to seek truth and knowledge.
We found that consciousness is aware and seeks knowledge, and must therefore be conscious mind question. The question is to seek truth and start on the path to knowledge. Therefore, the choice between the pills is definitely upon us. The fact that we are aware appears to require us to take the red pill.
However, this may simply be facing someone who would rather take the blue pill. May wish to seek the truth otherwise, or in less severe circumstances, the mind. They can choose the blue pill and not deny their consciousness, but seek the truth, it would clearly deny their consciousness.
So we are philosophically driven to seek the truth and act on the question of whether the endeavor is itself seeking the truth. As the conscious mind will always seek the truth. However, choice of red or blue pill is not only a question of choice between whether or not it is a personal choice about how to detect the truth.
